OCCUPY WINSTON-SALEM: First Protest Scheduled for October 16
Winston-Salem, NC; October 12, 2011.
Occupy Winston-Salem has organized their first public non-violent protest at a local Bank of America branch on Sunday, October 16 from 11am-2pm. We will be on the sidewalk in front of the Branch at 426 South Stratford Road in Winston-Salem, at the corner of Stratford and Knollwood.
Bank of America was chosen as our first target for protest because they were the one company that kept coming up as a source of frustration in our community. We’re frustrated by a lack of transparency on how bailout funds were spent. We’re upset that they haven’t paid any federal income tax in the past two years. We’re frustrated at their lending practices including the acquisition of Countrywide Mortgage and their aggressive home foreclosure practices, in spite of us bailing them out when they were near bottom. We’re angry about usurious sub-prime rates. We’re frustrated by their off-shore holdings. We’re frustrated by their layoffs. We’re frustrated by their member fees.
In addition to standing together against these practices, we are encouraging our neighbors to move their money from large, multinational banks to locally owned financial institutions (credit unions and banks). Taking control of our capital will help end the power these banks wield on a national level.
We encourage the public to come out en masse and help spread this message to our neighbors. We ask folks to bring signs, water, and their friends.
Training in our principles of non-violence and safety will be given on site.
